Tabi NAKAMURA

No. 1 (May 15th, 1998)

I am 12 years old now. It means that I'm over 60 years old if I were a human and old enough to give a piece of advice to the young.
As a natural-born innocent, I've lived my life carefree. But still there're a lot of dramas in my life.

I hear that my grand grandma (my "mom"'s grandma) who died before my birth used to say, "I really want you to write my life full of vicissitude!". But she's died without even telling mom that story, which mom and grandma feel so sorry.

3 years ago, I wrote my own life (just a short story) by grandma's request. To my surprise, many people liked it, and asked me when I'll write the next one. So this is a good chance for me, and I decided to write again. But being a cat, I don't remember such old things well, so mom will help me.

Well, I'm going to tell you about the day that I and mom first met.
It was a sunny Sunday in June, 1986. I was in a "WAN-NYAN HOUSE" ("BAWWOW-MEW HOUSE") of TOKYU HANDS DEPARTMENT STORE. I was a tiny kitten not 2 months old yet.

I was born as a hybrid cat. Once, a beautiful lady with a gorgeous coat and a slim and cool vagrant fell in a forbidden love, and had a kitten. It's me. (I believe so.) So when I was a really kitten, same as a lot of hybrid cats, I had to find my family by myself.

In the "WAN-NYAN HOUSE", there were so many cats and dogs waiting for their gentle mother and father coming. Stayed there too long, some cats were almost adults. I was the smallest.
We cats were sold for \500 though the dogs were sold for \1,000! Don't you think it's a discrimination? I was angry, but there I met mom, so I decided to forget it.
Mom who made up her mind to live with a cat was in the crowd.

(Her mom wrote: "WAN-NYAN HOUSE" was a house for the hybrid cats and dogs who were looking for their family. But some kids bought their own cats and/or dogs by themselves and their parents didn't like it. So it was closed. Now, it's named "NEKOTAMA" and only its members can find their new families. The cats are not sold only for \500 anymore! I think Tabi is very very very good for her price!)

I have been told this by mom hundreds times: Mom fell in love with me at the first sight.

Now I'm a kind of fat cat who have to eat diet dry food, but in those days I was a tiny, light kitten. I was so curious that I tried to play with every cat and jumped in the big cage. Mom loved me at once, named me "Tabi" (means "socks" in Japanese) for I had white paws, and decided to take me her home.

Males wore blue ribbons, and females wore red one around their necks. I've worn a red ribbon too, but it was changed to the yellow one which shows that "this kitten is sold". And I was waiting for mom for about an hour while she was shopping.

When she came back, she saw me and thought "Oh, this kitten with the yellow ribbon is the cutest! I made a mistake, can I change the cat? Oh, no, I can't...". She was so stupid. Yes, she chose me twice!!

And she took me my new home in Gotokuji, Tokyo.
